What is The Silver Sled?

The Silver Sled is a 70 Mile Dog Race from Haines Junction to Silver City and return (a stage race), with racers spending the night in Silver City on the shores of Kluane Lake at the Arctic Research Institute Kluane Lake Research Station.  The race occurs in January 2021 to not conflict with other Yukon Races. It runs on one of the most scenic trails in the Yukon. To accommodate for the shorter daylight in January the main race has been shortened form 100 to 70 miles. It should be a great training race for longer races later in the season. Traveling through the valleys and hills below Yukon's spectacular Kluane Ranges is a magical experience racers don't soon forget! Mushers have the options to sign up for a one day 35 mile race on Saturday January 23rd. Newcomers are welcome. The 35 Mile Race can also be tackled by Skijor Teams. The Full 70 Mile Race is a 35 mile run to Silver City followed by a 35 Mile Run back to Bear Creek, Haines Junction. The accomodations at the Arctic Institute are in cabins and meals will be served in the common hall. We will adhere to current covid regulations.

The race is organized and promoted by the Silver Sled Race Committee, a non-profit organization based in Haines Junction/ Mendenhall. In oder to keep this event running in a sustainable fashion during these challenging Covid times, we have reverted to the original race route along the pipline and also moved the Start and Finish Line to former Bear Creek Lodge, to minimize the impact the race has on the community of Haines Junction.
