Race Details for the 100 miles in 2017.
The 2018 50-mile-race will have a different route. Information will be available soon.
Okay, we lied. Race details are in the Race Rules. What you need to know here is this:
The Race travels about 50 miles from Haines Junction to the Arctic Institute at Silver City, and back again the next day after a long and comfortable afternoon and night spent hanging out with all your best musher friends and everybody's dogs. (Please don't bring pet dogs....). The team with the fastest cumulative time for both Saturday and Sunday wins the race. If there are less than three youth mushers (12 - 17), they will be competing in the same pool as the rest of the mushers.
There are no fewer than THREE road crossings, so if you are skijoring or you like shiny runners....well, you have been warned. There are lots of volunteers to help with the crossings, as well as other areas of the trail that could be tricky, and volunteers have tried very hard to keep snow on the pavement for you.
Please refer to the information and trail map below and the Race Rules for any other details of how this stage race goes down!
Race Start, Location and Parking
- Race begins at 11 am from the Rodeo Grounds in Haines Junction, across the road from the Fas Gas on the Alaska Highway.
- Mandatory meeting is at 9 am on Saturday, March 4, at the St. Elias Convention Centre. Please park at the Convention Centre, as dog parking at the Rodeo Grounds will be assigned based on bib numbers.
- You may drop dogs at Bear Creek Summit, but they must be handed off to a handler. Race officials and/or volunteers cannot take dogs. Parking at the Summit is limited and is located on the Alaska Highway. Please be careful and watch for traffic.
- Once in Silver City, a volunteer will advise your handler where to park their dog-truck.
Meals and Accommodation Logistics
- Meals provided include dinner and breakfast in Silver City and a banquet dinner on Sunday afternoon/evening. Please bring extra food for yourself for lunch and snacks.
- Water in Silver City is NOT hot, so bring a cooker, etc., if you want your water hot.
- Please bring a sleeping bag and sleeping pad to Silver City. While beds will be available for mushers, handlers are not guaranteed a bed, so sleeping pads should be brought along.
- Also, if you have small children you would like to bring please let us know in advance so we can work to arrange appropriate accommodation for your family, if available.
Feel free to bring lawn chairs, games, instruments, or any other comfortable and fun way to pass the time, as we spend quite a bit of time hanging out in Silver City! The Silver Sled Race Committee wants everyone to have a great time at this fun and friendly little stage race!
