Founders Fun Run
Sean Fitzgerald, one of the Founders, doing a Fun Run of his own..... |
Okay, so in 2015 we promised Jim Stanford from Mosquito Lake, Alaska, that we would make a fun, non-competitive event called the Founders Race, or something to that effect. Jim, who ran every Silver Sled Race from 1997 - 2007 and was a good friend to the original founding Silver Sled-ers, had the idea that we should find a way to honour the folks who built this event. His idea was that people who just wanted to travel the beautiful trail and be part of the social fabric of the event could compete by running one leg of the Silver Sled. We agreed that this was a good idea.
While space is limited in Silver City, we figure there is still room for the group that likes to travel at the back of the pack, enjoy the scenery, and share in the merry-making of the Silver Sled! In 2017, we will run the founders run on the Saturday of the race, so that founding mushers will be able to enjoy the festivities at Silver City without the pressure of racing the following day. So, we are very pleased to reserve five more spaces for mushers who would like to run the scenic trail from Haines Junction to Silver City on the Saturday, enjoy the food, fire and camaraderie at Silver City while taking the opportunity to share some of the history of the event with the "new school" competing mushers. If this sounds like your speed, the cost is $100.00. To participate, please register online on our Silver Sled Registration Form, or email the Silver Sled Race Committee at silversledrace@gmail.com. You will be contacted directly and provided with additional details, such as when to arrive, distance options, etc.. Any questions, just email us or call us! Thanks, Jim, for the great idea! |
