SILVER SLED RACE 100 MILE RULES

1. MANDATORY MUSHERS MEETING AND REGISTRATION/WAIVER SIGNING
Saturday March 2, 2019
• 9:00am: REGISTRATION/VET CHECK for Silver Sled 100 Mile Race
• 9:30am: MANDATORY MUSHERS MEETING
2. AGE OF MUSHERS.
• All Silver Sled 100 Mile Race and Founder’s Fun Run mushers must be a minimum 14 years of age.
• Mushers between 14-17 years of age competing in the 100 Mile Race must have a signed declaration form from an adult musher attesting to their competence to complete the Race, as outlined in the Registration Form. The Silver Sled Race Committee/Race Marshall reserves the right to deny entry to participants in this age group that are deemed not to have enough experience to participate safely. Junior mushers must contact the Race Marshall, PRIOR to the race date, at: hansoettli@me.com
3. ENTRY FEES IN CANADIAN DOLLARS
• Silver Sled 100 Mile Race: $200 (Includes Accommodation/Meals at Silver City and Sunday banquet for Musher & up to 1 Handler)
• Extra Meals Silver City/Sunday banquet: $25/person
4. WAIVER
• All mushers must sign the waiver or entry to any event will be denied.
• If the musher is under 18 years of age, a parent or legal guardian must sign the waiver.
5. COMMERCIAL OPERATORS
Any commercial operators allowing someone else to run their dogs in the
Silver Sled Chili Paw Race for monetary gain MUST have liability insurance under the Yukon Wilderness Guides Act. Commercial Operators’ insurance policies must include The Silver Sled Race as “an additional insured” in order for their clients to enter the race. (Proof of above is required for entry).
6. WEATHER
Race officials and the organizing committee reserve the right to cancel or postpone the race due to severe weather or poor/dangerous trail conditions.
7. PHOTOGRAPHS
Photographs of mushers during the Silver Sled Race events may be used in our promotional materials.
8. PRIZES
Prizes, (including monetary prizes) may be dispersed for winnings at the discretion of the Silver Sled Race Committee.
9. NUMBER OF DOGS
• Silver Sled 100: 10 Dogs maximum, 8 dogs minimum.
• Silver Sled 100 Skijorer: 4 dogs maximum, 2 dogs minimum.
• Silver Sled Junior Mushers aged 12-17: 8-dog maximum, 6 dog minimum.
• No additions to any teams after start
10. NO ADDITIONS OR REPLACEMENTS OF DOGS OR MUSHER/ SKIJORER
• All dogs must arrive in Haines Junction at the end of the race either in the team or in the sled, except dogs dropped at Bear Creek Summit or at Silver City. (no replacements)
• Once a dog is dropped it is out of the race.
• No switching of dogs between any teams.
• Dogs dropped are the responsibility of musher and handler
• Only one musher/skijorer per team is permitted, and that musher/skijorer must complete the race with that team only.
11. RACE START
• The race will be timed starts at two-minute intervals. Start times are as follows:
• Silver Sled 100 Mile: March 2nd, 11:00am
• Skijorers will start ½ hour (one half hour) before the first team departs
• March 3rd: Stage 2, Silver City to Haines Junction, Start time 9:00am SKIJORERS, 9:30am MUSHERS
• Starting order will be in reverse order of arrival at Silver City (i.e. fastest team in Stage 1 will start last), minimum aggregate time will determine the winner.
• Finish time is determined when the team and musher crosses the finish line.
• Bibs must be worn over outerwear and be visible at all times.
DOG GEAR/SLEDS
• A musher may choose any type of sled.
• The standard harnesses, gang lines, tug lines, necklines and dual leader necklines must be properly fastened to the dogs throughout the race while the team is in motion. This includes when the team stops for brief adjustments to harnesses, lines and booties, and while being passed by an overtaking team.
• No switching of sleds.
• Only one (1) sled/pulk per musher/skijorer will be used throughout the race.
• In the event of repairs, there must not be significant alteration of size or reduction in weight.
• Help with sled/pulk repairs that is available to all mushers/skijorers may be allowed with prior approval of the Race Marshal.
• One replacement of skis may be secured on the pulk and swapped at any point along the trail, or made available at Bear Creek Summit or Silver City from participants own supplies.
• Metal edges skis are not permitted in the Silver Sled 100 Mile race.
13. MANDATORY GEAR (Both Stages)
Dog Sled category
• Sled bags must be capable of carrying mandatory gear and one dog.
• Mushers should have the required items in their possession at all times. If a musher loses a required article of gear between start and finish, he/she cannot check in until he/she has acquired and replaced the lost item. In the event of unavoidable and accidental loss along the trail, the Race Marshal shall assess a suitable time penalty.
• Mandatory gear will be checked at the start (Haines Junction), on arriving in Silver City, on departing Silver City and finishing in Haines Junction.
• Should any mandatory gear be missing at the finish, thirty (30) minutes per item will be added to the finish time.
Dogsled mandatory gear list:
• Sled capable of carrying all mandatory gear and one dog
• Eight (8) booties per dog – one set may be worn
• Axe
• Knife/Cable cutter (for cable lines)
• Tie off Snub Line and Snow hook
• Head lamp
• Sleeping Bag
• Fire lighting materials.
• Snacks for both musher and dogs
Skijor category
• Pulks are mandatory for skijorers.
• If a skijor team must drop a dog while on the trail and requires assistance to transport their dog, they will be automatically disqualified. The Silver Sled will not guarantee the availability of assistance to transport injured dogs.
Skijor mandatory gear list:
• Eight (8) booties per dog – one set may be worn
• Headlamp
• Knife
• Axe
• Sleeping Bag
• Fire lighting materials
• Snacks for skijorer and dogs
• Suitable equipment to restrain dogs on the trail (i.e. snow hook, lines to attach team to tree, etc)
14. HANDLERS
• Handlers may assist during the start of the race and/or ride in the sled for the first 100 meters.
• Handlers are not allowed on the trail between the start and finish, with the exception of the parking lot at Bear Creek Summit, where dogs may be dropped, unless to assist in extenuating circumstances such as driverless team, out of control team, dog fight, injured musher or injured dog etc.
• No assistance that could result in competitive advantage may be accepted or solicited.
• In Silver City handlers may help part their teams and are allowed to help care for dogs at this location
15. VET CHECK
• All dogs will undergo a visual inspection before the race starts. The Race Veterinarians reserve the right to undertake more thorough inspections if they are of the view that it is necessary, and/or are requested to by the musher.
• Vet inspections will occur on the morning of March 2rd, before or following the mandatory meeting.
• All dogs entered in the race need to have current parvovirus and distemper vaccinations. Certificates and/or invoices will be required to prove vaccination status. All certificates will be examined at the mandatory musher/skijor meeting.
• The Race Marshal in conjunction with the Race Veterinarian has authority to disqualify unfit teams or remove an unfit dog prior to and up to the start of the race.
16. DOG CARE
• There shall be no cruel or inhumane treatment of dogs.
• Whips, jinglers and full choke collars are prohibited.
• The Race Marshal in conjunction with the Race Veterinarian will have absolute authority over the dog team. Their judgment as to withdrawal of a dog or dogs from the race, or any other conditions relative to dog care on the trail, shall be final.
• No dog team competing in Silver Sled 100 Mile race shall leave either Haines Junction or Silver City until the dogs in that team are deemed fit to run in the race.
• Any inappropriate or inhumane treatment of dogs will result in a penalty and/or disqualification and/or refusal of future entry to the race.
17. DRUGS
• The musher/skijorer must have his/her dog team free of all prohibited drugs and foreign substances. Any dog continuing in the race (i.e. Competing in Stage 2) shall not receive any of the following:
o Any substance by injection
o Acupuncture
o Cold laser therapy
o Any other treatment or therapy that, in the opinion of the Race Veterinarian is not in the best interest of a dog that is to continue on in the race.
• The Race Veterinarian must be notified of any dogs receiving allowed medication to treat an existing medical problem and a statement from the attending veterinarian describing the diagnosis and treatment must be presented to the Race Veterinarian at the mandatory pre-race mushers meeting and/or vet check.
• If a Race Veterinarian finds it necessary to treat a dog with a prohibited drug, that dog must be dropped from the race.
• The following drugs will be permitted subject to the approval of the official supervising Race Veterinarian.
o Topical medications (note: DMSO not allowed).
o Dewormers
o Antibiotics (except procaine penicillin)
o Antidiarrheal (except those with salicylates, i.e. Pepto-Bismol)
o Ovaban and/or Cheque Drops (milbolerone – estrus (heat) suppressant use only)
o Medications for the prevention and treatment of gastric ulcers
o (E.g. Omeprazole, subject to the approval of the Race Veterinarian)
18. EXPIRED DOGS
• Any dog that expires during the race for any reason must be taken to the start/finish and submitted to the Race Official, or it may be directly submitted to a Race Official at a sooner opportunity. If no Race Official is present, the dog may be submitted to a Race Veterinarian.
• A necropsy swill be performed on all expired dogs by licensed veterinary pathologists or veterinarian at no cost to the Silver Sled Race Committee.
• The Silver Sled Race Committee must be notified of necropsy results
• An expired dog is an automatic disqualification from the Silver Sled Race.
19. SUBSTITUTES
• Once a musher/skijorer leaves the starting line in Haines Junction, no substitutes will be allowed (Dogs or Mushers).
20. MARKING OF DOGS
• The Silver Sled Race reserves the right to mark any or all dogs to prevent changing/switching of dogs during the race. The method of marking will be announced at the drivers meeting.
21. PASSING RULES
• The passing musher must be within 50 feet (approximately 15 m) of team being overtaken to demand the trail.
• Passing team must call “Trail”
• The overtaken musher must slow down or stop, depending on the situation, to allow the passing team to pass cleanly, except in no-mans-land.
• The overtaken musher must allow the passing team one minute to untangle.
• The overtaken musher must allow a distance of 50 meters between them and the passing musher.
• Five minutes must elapse before passing again.
• Skijorers – No active poling while passing a team is permitted. Poling must stop once the front of the skis are parallel with the rear ends of the sled runners or skis of the team in front, and may only resume once the passing team is 5 m clear of the passed team’s lead dogs.
• Teams should maintain a distance apart of at least one team length at all times except during passing.
• No-mans-land: would be Silver City Access Road and 1 mile from the finish line in Haines Junction.
22. OUTSIDE ASSISTANCE
• No musher may receive outside assistance between start and finish line with the exception stated in rules 13 and 14 and at road crossings, to assist safe crossing only.
• No assistance or pacing, resulting in a competitive advantage, may be accepted or solicited.
23. SPORTSMANSHIP AND TRAIL MANNERS
• In addition to passing rules and dog care rules, each musher shall behave in an acceptable manner in terms of sportsmanship, which includes respect for other mushers, spectators, race officials and trail helpers; and the use of proper language when addressing any of the above.
• Littering of the trail and checkpoint areas is not permitted. Rude behavior or inappropriate actions by a driver or handler will result in a penalty and/or disqualification and/or refusal of future entry to the race.
24. SLEEPING AREAS/ACCOMMODATION/MEALS
• Indoor/sheltered sleeping areas for mushers/skijorers and one handler will be designated at the Arctic Research Institute’s Kluane Lake Research Station. The Checkpoint Manager will assign cabins, heated wall tents and/or designated areas in the main hall to mushers/skijorers as they arrive.
• Mushers/Skijorers/handlers must bring their own sleeping pads and sleeping bags.
• A musher/skijorer and handler have the option of establishing their own campsite outside, or in their dog-truck, camper etc., and subject to the approval of the Checkpoint Manager.
• Accommodation is only provided for the musher/skijorer and one handler. If additional people would like to be present in Silver City, accommodation is not guaranteed. Beds will go to mushers and their handlers first, as available. Parking is also limited to one vehicle per musher/skijorer.
• Dinner and breakfast will be provided to each musher/skijorer and one handler in Silver City. If additional people are attending in your party, an extra meal fee of $25/person must be paid at the mandatory meeting.
• Mushers/skijorers should contact the Silver Sled Race Committee seven (7) days in advance if they are expecting additional people in their party. (E.g. children, partner etc.). The Silver Sled Race Committee reserves the right to limit the number of additional person on-site.
• Pets are permitted in Silver City only if kept restrained at all times or in a vehicle.
• Owners of any pets reported as disturbing the teams will be fined $50.00 per incident, paid in cash to the Race Marshall.
24. GOOD STANDING
All drivers that wish to enter must be in good standing with the organization of the Silver Sled Race. No one convicted of animal abuse or neglect may enter the Silver Sled Race or any of its events. The Race Organization in conjunction with the Race Marshal reserve the right to refuse any or all entry to the race in the interest of the race or the sport as a whole.
25. REPORTING OF RULES VIOLATIONS
It is the duty of every driver to report all violations of the rules to the Race Marshal no later than 30 Minutes after crossing the finish line.
THE DECISIONS OF THE RACE COMMITTEE AND THE RACE MARSHALL AND JUDGES ARE FINAL.
WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO MODIFY RULES UP UNTIL THE START OF THE RACE.

• Mushers/skijorers should contact the Silver Sled Race Committee seven (7) days in advance if they are expecting additional people in their party. (E.g. children, partner etc.). The Silver Sled Race Committee reserves the right to limit the number of additional person on-site.
• Pets are permitted in Silver City only if kept restrained at all times or in a vehicle.
• Owners of any pets reported as disturbing the teams will be fined $50.00 per incident, paid in cash to the Race Marshall.
24. GOOD STANDING
All drivers that wish to enter must be in good standing with the organization of the Silver Sled Race. No one convicted of animal abuse or neglect may enter the Silver Sled Race or any of its events. The Race Organization in conjunction with the Race Marshal reserve the right to refuse any or all entry to the race in the interest of the race or the sport as a whole.
25. REPORTING OF RULES VIOLATIONS
It is the duty of every driver to report all violations of the rules to the Race Marshal no later than 30 Minutes after crossing the finish line.
THE DECISIONS OF THE RACE COMMITTEE AND THE RACE MARSHALL AND JUDGES ARE FINAL.
WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO MODIFY RULES UP UNTIL THE START OF THE RACE.
